Yaksha Malla, reigning from 1428, expanded his kingdom greatly but was unable to consolidate his territories. Before his death, he divided the Kathmandu Valley kingdom among his three sons and one daughter, giving rise to the independent city states of Bhaktapur, Kantipur (Kathmandu), Lalitpur (Patan), and Banepa. This division caused jealousy, dissension and rivalry among the rulers, severely weakening the power structure of the valley and ultimately leading to the downfall of the Malla dynasty with the conquest by Prithvi Narayan Shah of Gorkha.
